MS Word Home Tab Explained
The Home Tab is used to perform many of the common formatting like cutting and pasting, changing fonts and sizes, Insert and delete text and images into documents, changing paragraph formats, applying styles, and editing text and images. Groups and buttons for this tab are described below.
Paste (Short cut Ctrl+V)
This button is used to insert items that have been cut or copied and stored on the clipboard into a document.
Cut (Short cut Ctrl+X)
To remove selected text and items from a document and store it on the clipboard, click this button.
Copy (Short cut Ctrl+C)
To make a copy of selected text and other items in a document and store it on the clipboard.
Format Painter (Short cut Ctrl+Shift+C)
To copy the formatting of selected text and then apply the formatting to other text in a document, click this button. After clicking this button a brush symbol will appear with the mouse pointer. A single click will apply the formatting to other selected text for one time only. To apply the formatting to other selected text several times, double click the format painter button. When all the formatting has been applied, click the button again to deactivate the format painter.
The button located in the lower right corner of the Clipboard group beneath format painter and is used to open the Clipboard Task Pane. Clipboard task pane will display when items that are added to the clipboard are displayed and allows more than one item to be added to the clipboard before the text and items are pasted into the document.
Font Type (Short cut Ctrl+Shift+F)
Click this button to select any type of font for whole text or for selected text within the document.
Font Size (Short cut Ctrl+Shift+P)
Font Size drop down button is used to increase and decrease the size of the font for the whole text or for selected text within the document.
Increase Font Size (Short cut Ctrl+>)
To increase the size of the font for selected text this button is used. Each time the button is clicked, the font size will increase by one or more point sizes.
Decrease Font Size (Short cut Ctrl+<)
The size of the font of selected text will decrease by one or more point sizes by clicking this button. To decrease the size of selected text, click this button.
This drop down button is used change the selected text to Sentence case, UPPERCASE, lowercase, and to apply other capitalization.
Clear All Formatting
The selected text become as default after clear all the formatting that has been applied to selected text, click this button to clear formatting of selected text.
Bold (Short cut Ctrl+B)
This button is used to apply bold formatting to selected text in a document. Selected text become dark after applying bold formatting by clicking this button.
Italic (Short cut Ctrl+I)
To italicize the selected text in a document, click this button.
Underline (Short cut Ctrl+U)
To make selected text underline in a document, click this button.
This button can be clicked to draw or strikethrough a single line through selected text in a document.
Subscript (Short cut Ctrl+=)
To create small letters (subscript) below the text baseline, click this button. Select the letter which you want to create subscript and click this button.
Superscript (Short cut Ctrl+Shift++)
To create small letters above the upper base line of text, click this button. Select the letter which you want to create superscript and click this button.
Text Effects and Typography
Use this button to apply visual effects like, outline, shadow, reflection, glow and other styles to selected text in a document.
Text Highlight Color
The selected text can be highlighted by clicking this button. The text look like it has been marked with a highlighter color pen. Different colors can be chosen while applying highlighter.
To change the color of the selected text, click this button.
Font Box Launcher (Short cut Ctrl+D)
The button which is located in the lower right corner of the Font group is called Font box launcher and is used to launch the Font dialog box. With the help of this dialog box additional changes to the Font can be made.
To create a bulleted list with selected text within a document, click this button. Click the list drop down to view the gallery of bullet styles.
Click this button to create a numbered list of selected text within a document. The number styles gallery can be viewed by clicking the list drop down arrow is clicked.
Click this button to create an outline style within a word document. There is an option available to create new outline styles for a document.
This button is used to decrease the indent, Every time when the button is clicked, the indent will decrease one level.
To increase the indent for a paragraph, numbered or bulleted list, or a multilevel list. Every time when this button is clicked, the indent will increase one level.
This button is used to sort a text paragraphs, tables and lists in ascending and descending order. The sort dialog box will display all the options available in it. This dialog box is used to specify the criteria for the sort.
Paragraph marks, tabs that have been applied to text in a document can be viewed by clicking this button. Select this button to show the formatting and to hide this deselect this button again.
Align Left (Short cut Ctrl+L)
Click this button to align the selected text or paragraph to the left page margin. The text at the left page margin will be even but the text in the right margin will be uneven. The default alignment for all documents created in Word is left alignment.
Center Align (Short cut Ctrl+E)
To align all the selected text or a paragraph in between the right and left page margin of a document, this button can be used.
Align Right (Short cut Ctrl+R)
This button is used to align selected text or paragraphs in a document to the right page margin. The text at the right margin will be even but the text on the left side will be uneven.
Justify (Short cut Ctrl+J)
The Selected text or paragraph in a document will be aligned evenly at both the edges of left and right page margins by clicking this button. If necessary, spacing will be adjusted automatically between words.
Line and Paragraph Spacing
Click this drop down arrow list to change spacing between lines of text or between paragraphs in a document. Paragraph Spacing options can be used on the Design tab to apply the same spacing to a whole document text in the document.
This button is used to change the color of the background for the selected text in a document.
Use this button to create a border around selected text or a paragraph. The drop down arrow beside the button will display a gallery of colors. By clicking the button apply the border to the selected text or paragraph.
Paragraph Box Launcher
The button which is located in the lower right corner of the Paragraph Group is used to open the Paragraph Dialog Box which includes additional Paragraph formatting options.
The styles gallery contains of many different paragraphs formatting options in a document. Right-click on the Style Button and click modify, if you want to make changes to the Style.
This button is used to view and apply additional styles to format text and paragraphs in the document. This button is located in the lower right corner of the Styles group.
Find (Short cut Ctrl+F)
Find option is used to locate a particular word or phrase within a document. After clicking this button the Navigation Task Pane will display to the left of the document and when a word or phrase is entered in the search box to be located within the document, a list of the all possible matches will appear below the Search box.
Replace (Short cut Ctrl+H)
This option helps to locate a particular text within a document and replace it with other text. When Replace button is clicked, the Find and Replace dialog box will appear with the Replace option active where the words to be found and replaced are specified.
Options available with this button are to select all, select objects, or to select text with similar formatting within the document. Use this button to select text or objects within a document.
Collapse the Ribbon
The up arrow button which is located on the lower right corner at the end of the home tab. This button is used to view only names of tabs and other options becomes hidden.
